TBM disassembly is now officially complete on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension project

We are pleased to announce that the WEC construction team successfully extracted the final piece from our last tunnel boring machine (TBM), Renny, on July 18th. This marks the official completion of the TBM disassembly on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE) project. 

The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, a new rapid transit line, is one of the major projects driving the significant expansion of the transit system in the multicultural Greater Toronto Area. This extension is designed to enhance connectivity along a vital east-west corridor in Toronto. This line will improve travel to the west end of the city and into Mississauga, Canada’s sixth largest city, benefiting numerous commuters who travel daily between these two cities along Lake Ontario. The ECWE project, a 9.2-kilometre extension of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit, will extend from the future Mount Dennis station to Renforth Drive. The system will connect to several local and regional transit services, including Union Pearson Express and Kitchener GO train lines, GO bus routes, and local TTC and Mississauga MiWay bus services. There are also plans to explore a connection to Toronto Pearson International Airport. 

The project takes into account the forecasted population growth in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area from 7 million to over 10 million by 2041. By that same year, the extension is expected to see nearly 70,000 daily rides and bring 37,500 more people within walking distance to transit. This shift from cars to trains will help reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5,800 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, supporting the region's population growth and improving the quality of life for people commuting between Toronto and Mississauga.
