Ghella awarded $2.81B STAGE 2 Sydney Metro Works

Ghella, with its joint venture partners John Holland and CPB Contractors, will deliver twin new metro rail tunnels deep under the world-famous Sydney Harbour as part of the landmark Sydney Metro – Australia’s biggest public transport project. The joint venture has been selected by the NSW Government to deliver the $2.81 billion Sydney Metro City & Southwest Tunnel and Station Excavation (TSE) Works contract. Managing Director, Lech Garwacki, said he was delighted to be a part of a strong focused team to deliver a key section of the Sydney Metro project, with such a unique element of the work – rail tunnels under Sydney Harbour. “We recognise the importance of the project and will ensure our collective proven experience and expertise is focused on delivering this world-ranking project and its objectives, including sustainable design and construction, local employment opportunities and a socially inclusive procurement strategy.” Winning the Sydney Metro project confirms Ghella’s solid construction presence in Australia. The company was part of the successful Legacy Way tunnel project in Brisbane which was completed breaking world records in tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavations. The $1.5 billion project achieved the 2013 Award for the Major Tunnelling Project (over $500 million) at the International Tunnelling Awards. Mr Garwacki said: “We consider it an honour to be working with Transport for NSW and the NSW Government to deliver Australia’s biggest public transport project, which will transform the way people get around Sydney.” The Sydney tunnel and station excavation works include:

  • Twin 15.5km tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham travelling under Sydney Harbour and the CBD using five TBMs
  • 57 cross passages approximately every 240m between the tunnels and a temporary access shaft at Blues Point
  • Tunnel dive structures at Chatswood and Marrickville
  • Excavation of six new underground metro stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo
  • A crossover cavern at Barangaroo to allow trains to cross from one track to another
  • Design and manufacture of about 99,000 precast concrete segments to line the tunnels
  • Demolition and removal of existing buildings on the construction sites.
