Earth Day 2022 #InvestInOurPlanet

All TOGETHER now! We must Invest in Our Planet!

In 2021 Ghella Abergeldie JV, the Joint Venture building New Zealand's largest bored wastewater tunnel, obtained funding within the Government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund, administered by EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority). The fund is one of a range of initiatives in the Governments Electric Vehicles Programme and aims to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles in New Zealand.

What Did We Do?
With the help of co-funding with EECA, Central Interceptor has purchased three electric trucks with lift-off battery swapping capability and charging infrastructure, to be used to transport thousands of  tonnes of spoil  from  the Central Interceptor shafts excavation..

What are  the Outcomes?
For every 100,000 km travelled the trucks will be saving 40,000 liters of diesel, resulting in  a reduction of over 300 tonnes of CO2 emissions as the trucks produce 79% less carbon emissions when compared to their diesel counterparts. This is the equivalent of burning approximately 3300 m3 of wood OR powering 400+ average homes for a year!

What are the benefits?
Electric Trucks produce fewer carbon emissions, are quieter than diesel and have lower maintenance and running costs. This brings the GAJV one step closer in achieving its ISC (Infrastructure Sustainability Council) Rating and contributes to Ghella’s corporate target to reduce carbon emissions in our worksites worldwide

Why was this initiative remarkable?
The Electric Truck proposal was granted $500,000 from the Low Emission Vehicle Contestable
Fund – a very competitive process with over 55 eligible proposals from a wide range of
organizations seeking around $13 million. Only 22 projects were approved for funding, including us!

green future is a prosperous future!
